Exploring Bridges
Grade Level: K-5
Teachers who know more math tend to have higher achieving students. Teachers who know more of the math associated with the curriculum they are using and use standards based instruction tend to have higher achieving students. This course promotes deeper understanding of the underlying mathematical concept behind the Bridges K-5 curriculum.
"The mathematics that teachers need to know to do math well is different from the mathematics needed to teach math well." - Deborah Ball. This course focuses on the mathematics that teachers need to know to implement Bridges with the greatest fidelity. Instructional strategies that deepen student understanding are modeled in the course as well as made explicit through participant reflection.
In this 20-hour course, participants will:
- Develop their own mathematical capacity
- Explore visual models for mathematics
- Explore all five strands of math content
- Discuss and reflect about the pedagogy modeled in the course
