Bridges Student Work - Grade Two

We offer a number of annotated student work samples to give you a sense of Bridges Grade Two in the classroom. See also Bridges Grade Two Sample Materials.

Sample One

Exploring Shapes, Symmetry, Area & Number is the fourth unit of Bridges Grade Two. The paper-and-pencil assessment from that unit includes shape identification and shape description. By comparing student work from the beginning and end of this 5-6 week unit, the teacher is able to see what growth and development has taken place. When examining this student assessment teachers look for greater accuracy in identifying triangles, and longer and more complete descriptions.

Sample Two

The first unit of Bridges in Mathematics, Grade Two focuses on pattern. Simple and complex repeating patterns are explored and used as a foundation for introducing patterns that grow in some regular manner. In one of the first activities children are asked to write and draw what they know about patterns. 5–6 weeks later they repeat the assessment. By comparing these sheets, teachers see differences in the complexity of the patterns children draw.

Sample Three

Work samples show changes in students’ strategies and their ability to communicate. Here are three samples of one second grader’s work, showing his development from October to June. In each case, the student is solving a picture problem posed by one of his classmates.
